On behalf of the CSA Board of Trustees and CoCA whānau, we'd like to warmly invite you to the opening celebration of 'I can't shake the stranger out of you' by Casey Carsel
In Casey Carsel’s latest solo exhibition at CoCA, they explore identity and community within the Jewish diaspora. Using symbolic pictorial language and traditional Jewish papercutting, Carsel examines the shared and personal Jewish cultural histories of England and New Zealand. Their artwork explores themes of absence, blending beauty and repulsion to create a thought-provoking experience.
The Ōtautahi-born Jewish artist and writer was trained in ceramics, poetry, and fibre at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA in Writing) and Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland (BFA Hons). They live their life between their chosen whānau in Tāmaki Makaurau and Ohio, where they are pursuing a PhD in Art History on Jewish apotropaics in early modern Ashkenaz at The Ohio State University.
Join us on Friday 29 August at 5.30pm for a mihi whakatau to celebrate the artist. We look forward to welcoming you back to the gallery soon!
