Call for Proposals
The Call for Proposals has now closed. Thank you to everyone who submitted applications.
We are proud to announce our first Open Call for an exhibition programme of works beginning in late 2023. Ōtautahi’s long-running contemporary art gallery, the Centre for Contemporary Art Toi Moroki, is reopening in mid 2023. CoCA is partnering with Canterbury Museum to enable the museum to present exhibitions while its main site is undergoing major renovations. The museum will occupy the upper galleries, while the Canterbury Society of the Arts will present a reimagined contemporary art programme and gallery downstairs.
CoCA is now programmed by a group of Waitaha-based art practitioners with the downstairs Ō Papa Gallery as the main exhibition space. We are committed to presenting and supporting a diverse range of art practices and discourses both within and without the gallery. We aim to encourage and nurture Te Waipounamu and in particular Waitaha-based artists, and also contribute and connect to a wider arts ecology.
We encourage applications from artists, collectives, community groups, curators, and writers with proposals for an exhibition or ideas for public programming for the Ō Papa gallery. We are also interested in Waitaha-based offsite proposals.
We can offer some curatorial guidance, technical assistance, promotional and logistical support, exhibition-led public programming, a contribution towards production costs, and artist fees in alignment with Arts Makers Aotearoa guidelines.
Proposals are accepted in many formats. It’s important to us that this process is accessible.
Proposals should include:
- An outline of your project either in writing (up to 500 words), or as an audio/audiovisual file (up to five minutes long)
- Where possible, visual representation of the concept or a rendered image
- Examples of previous work
- An artist biography or CV
- A budget (including freight, installation costs, etc.)
- Any technical requirements
- An estimated project timeline
Please send proposals to: proposals@coca.org.nz with the subject line ‘Call for Proposals’.
Proposals are due by 28 May 2023 11:59pm
We will aim to notify the outcome of your proposal within four weeks of the closing date and can provide feedback if requested.
All proposals received will be kept confidential.
The specifications of the Ō Papa gallery can be viewed here.
